BRK Electrical Contractors, LLC was incorporated February 15th, 2003 by Marion A. Hayes, III. The formation of the company was the culmination of an eleven-year goal. Upon graduation from Washington University in St. Louis in 1991 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, he took the unusual step and entered the 8000-hour Joint Electrical Apprenticeship Program with IBEW Local #1 and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) to become a journeyman electrician and better prepare for eventually owning and managing an electrical contracting company. Three years later, Marion entered graduate school and went on to obtain his master’s in construction management from Washington University. Simultaneously, he completed his apprenticeship in December 1995 and immediately began using his degrees working in project management for the next seven years with two of the top 50 electrical contracting firms in the U.S.
The company was founded with a combination of start-up capital, a personal loan, an SBA micro loan, and an Urban Enterprise Loan administered by the local Minority Business Council in St. Louis.
The funds for the latter two loans and advice were received from the St. Louis Region of the Missouri Small Business Development Center. Through its former regional director, Hayes formed an advisory board in April 2003 that continues to meet every two months.
BRK’s first two contracts were for a small mechanical equipment connection at Washington University School of Medicine and with AmerenUE for a motor control center replacement. It was from these humble beginnings with two electricians that the business has grown to its current size of currently 22 electricians and three office personnel. In 2007, BRK was recognized as the St. Louis Minority Business Council’s Construction Business of the Year.
Today, BRK Electric performs electrical contracting in the commercial, government, institutional, and industrial sectors.
